Buffalo Gold Coins
Filed Under american buffalo gold coins
The American Buffalo coin is the initial 24-karat pure gold bullion coin offering from the U.S. Mint.
The Presidential Coin Act of 2005 serves as Congressional authorization for minting of the American Buffalo gold coin, commencing in 2006 and resulting in production and sales of 300,000 coins during that year alone.
Most all prior examples of gold coinage from the U.S. Mint were rendered in 22-karat gold, making the American Buffalo coin distinctive due to its status as the only widely circulated .9999 coin offered.

One side of the American Buffalo gold coin depicts a Native American male in profile, and the other face of the coin is characterized by a profile view of an American bison meant to represent "Black Diamond", which was an early 20th century feature of the New York Zoological Gardens. The depictions on the gold piece were the work of American artist James Earle Fraser, who had been under the tutelage of renowned sculpture artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the force behind the well-loved $20 Double Eagle gold coin, fabricated during the years 1907 to 1933. The artwork first appeared on the lauded "Indian Head" nickel, otherwise known as the "Buffalo" nickel, produced in America between 1913 and 1938.
Precisely one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of unadulterated gold goes into every American Buffalo gold coin. The coin's diameter measures 1.287 inches (or 32.70mm) and is 0.116 inches thick, which equates to roughly half the size of the $1 piece.
Currently, American Buffalo gold coins are available exclusively in a one troy ounce denomination.
