Authorized by Congress in 2005 and first minted that following June, the American Gold Buffalo is struck from .9999 fine gold making one of the most highly sought-after gold bullion coins on the market today. In fact, over 48,000 of these valuable coins were sold on it's first day of issue alone. Some of this demand may result from the shortage of gold coin blanks in 2009 that caused the coin's release to be delayed to late in the year in October.
