Authorized by Congress in 2005 and first minted that following June, the American Gold Buffalo is struck from .9999 fine gold making one of the most highly sought-after gold bullion coins on the market today. In fact, over 48,000 of these valuable coins were sold on it's first day of issue alone. Some of this demand may result from the shortage of gold coin blanks in 2009 that caused the coin's release to be delayed to late in the year in October. By early December the coins were sold out for good, leaving many purchasers eagerly awaiting the 2010 release.

"These stunning, classic designs of an American Indian and buffalo by James Earle Fraser tend to recall a more memorable age of artistry on coins, and have been favored by Americans since their first use in 1913."
These coins portray the images of the much revered Buffalo Nickel, circa 1913, Type l. The coin sports the iconic James Earle Fraser classic American Indian design on the obverse side and other Fraser image of the American Bison is featured on the reverse (tails) side.
